The Middle Back

Middle back pain is a very common annoyance in our world. This mid-section of the spine between the neck and low back is a prime candidate for stress and strain. I am hard-pressed to find patients that are not struggling with joint restrictions here. It is the longest part of the spine and the proverbial “middle child”.

Causes of Middle Back Pain

middle back painPoor posture is, of course, the main culprit of middle back pain. Remember, while joint restrictions aren’t dangerous, they can lead to more long-term problems. At the very least it is highly annoying.

Joint restrictions most commonly cause local tenderness and discomfort. You may notice that you cannot twist your body as far one direction. Mobility of the thoracic spine is paramount for the proper function of the shoulder. Problems here can be the beginning stages of a shoulder injury – especially in athletes. Middle back pain from a restricted joint often moves up or down.

Another problem here is the addition of 24 ribs making up our rib cage. These can become fixated. When they do, they can create all kinds of issues. The pain can be sharp and stabbing, or it can travel around to the chest. Usually, “stuck” ribs will make breathing very uncomfortable. Fortunately, it’s generally a quick and easy fix.

Be sure to tell your chiropractor if you have any tingling in your face, arms, or hands. Any chest pain, muscle weakness, or difficulty breathing regularly should also be noted.
