Understanding the Hidden Impact of Nerve Issues
Unraveling Nerve Pain, Numbness, and Weakness
Have you ever had that weird feeling where a limb just doesn’t feel quite right? Maybe it tingles, feels heavy, or you constantly need to stretch it. Then it turns painful. Then numb. And eventually… it starts to feel weak.
If this describes you or someone you know, you’re not alone — and you’re not crazy. This is how nerve compression often unfolds. As a chiropractor who specializes in musculoskeletal and neurological injuries, I want to break this down for you in plain language.
Let’s talk about what’s really happening — and more importantly, what you can do about it.
The Importance of Addressing Nerve Issues
Why Nerve Health Matters
Nerve pain, numbness, and weakness can significantly affect your daily life, hindering your ability to perform even the simplest tasks. Understanding these symptoms is crucial as they can be indicators of underlying health conditions that require attention. By addressing these issues, you can improve your quality of life and prevent further complications.

Exploring the Causes of Nerve Discomfort
🧠 What Is Nerve Compression?
Nerves are like electrical wires running through your body. They carry signals from your brain and spinal cord to your muscles and skin — letting you move, feel, and respond to your environment.
But these nerves can get compressed or irritated, either by tight muscles, swollen tissues, herniated discs, or even scar tissue. When that happens, it’s like stepping on a garden hose: the flow gets interrupted, and symptoms start to show.
Recognizing the Symptoms
🪜 The 4 Stages of Nerve Symptoms: From “Off” to “Out”
I often tell my patients that nerve symptoms don’t usually start with pain. In fact, they tend to follow this four-stage progression:
1. You Feel “Off”
This is the earliest warning sign. You might feel:
- Muscle tightness or tension
- A need to constantly stretch
- Twitching or cramping
- A sensation like something’s just… not right
This happens when the nerve isn’t firing normally — even before you feel pain.
2. Pain Kicks In
Next, the nerve fibers that sense pain start to get irritated. This can feel like:
- Burning
- Zapping
- Shooting pain
- Tingling
It may come and go at first but can become more constant if the compression worsens.
3. You Go Numb
Now the sensory portion of the nerve is shutting down. That same area that used to burn might now feel:
- Dull
- Numb
- Like it doesn’t belong to you
Ironically, this stage can feel “less bad,” but it means things are getting worse.
4. You Get Weak
If compression continues without relief, the motor fibers of the nerve are affected. This leads to:
- Fatigue with simple tasks
- Grip or limb weakness
- Trouble moving your hand, arm, or leg the way you used to
- Muscle wasting in chronic cases
This is the most serious stage — and can become permanent if left untreated.
🔍 Why Do These Symptoms Happen in This Order?
The above image shows the types of neurons that are inside of our nerves. The larger the nerve the more susceptible it is to compression.
You’d think that since the largest nerve fibers (motor) are most sensitive to compression, you’d lose strength first. But that’s not the case.
Here’s why:
- Early compression mostly affects how nerves conduct — not whether they function.
- Motor fibers start misfiring early, but weakness only shows up after advanced compression, long-standing damage, or axon loss.
- In the meantime, pain fibers, which are more resistant, become dominant — so you feel more pain before you lose strength.
In plain English? Your nerves scream before they go silent.
🧠 Real Talk: What Causes Nerve Compression?
Some common causes include:
- Herniated or bulged discs
- Degenerated/arthritic bones
- Tight muscles (scalenes, piriformis, etc.)
- Poor posture or altered positioning from repetitive behaviors
- Scar tissue from past injuries and surgeries
- Diabetes or systemic inflammation (this is like sneezing on the nerves)
- Old injuries that never fully healed
🚩 When Should You Be Worried?
You should seek care immediately if you notice:
- Progressive weakness
- Numbness in both sides (both arms/legs)
- Loss of bowel or bladder control
- Unexplained weight loss or systemic symptoms
These could indicate a more serious condition like cauda equina syndrome or central spinal cord compression, and they require advanced imaging and even emergent care.
Treating or Preventing Issues
🛠 How We Treat Nerve Compression at Whole Body Health Care
This isn’t a “pop and pray” situation. We use a multi-step, evidence-based approach:
✅ Step 1: Decompress the Nerve
- Gentle chiropractic adjustments
- Acupuncture for inflammation control and blood flow
- Ergonomic and lifestyle coaching
✅ Step 2: Restore Motion and Circulation
- Neurodynamic exercises (nerve flossing)
- Therapeutic modalities
- Targeted rehab and movement-based therapy
✅ Step 3: Strengthen and Protect
- Corrective exercises to stabilize joints
- Strength training to build endurance
- Education to prevent re-injury
✅ Bonus: Regenerative Options (Good to use at any stage!)
- PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)
- Ozone therapy for acute or chronic irritation and inflammation
🧬 Can Nerves Heal?
Yes — especially peripheral nerves. But time matters. Once a nerve starts degenerating, you have a window for best recovery:
- Mild cases: Full recovery in weeks to months
- Moderate: May take 3–6 months and require aggressive treatment
- Chronic: Complete recovery may be impossible if axonal loss has occurred
Nerves regenerate at 1mm/day or ~1 inch/month, so healing is slow but possible.
